About Baja at UCF

Coulburn driving in 1979 homecoming parade
Baja has deep roots here at UCF. Pictured is an old photo of Coulburn driving the baja car back when we were named Florida Technological University.

Every year our team of volunteer students design and manufacture a single passenger All-Terrain Vehicle to compete against over a hundred schools from all over the world. Through this club, students consolidate what they have learned in the classrooms, but also develop skills and acquire knowledge not covered inside the lecture halls, such as:

· Exposure to the Full Engineering Design Process

· Leadership, Management, and Team Work

· CAD and CAM software

· Finite Element Analysis Application

· Vehicle Dynamics Analysis

· Technical Drawings

· Manual and CNC Machining

· Composites and Metal Fabrication

UCF has been a part of the SAE Baja competition from the humble beginnings of the competition. It was even hosted here at the then named Florida Technological University, first in 1978 and again several times through to 1996. Each time UCF has entered at least one car and we aren’t stopping any time soon.

Baja Competition

"Baja SAE® consists of competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain."

In the 4 hour long endurance race our car is pushed to its absolute limits. Many teams dont make it out alive and this is by design. Only the strong will survive. Teams converge from all around the world to compete at an international scale. Each year we do our best to represent the University of Central Florida as a force to be reckoned with.

Become a part of Baja

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

We are located in the "Engine Research Laboratory". It’s a nice little shop on the southeast end of campus. If you see a building with an SAE banner raised proud, you're in the right place.

Baja meets every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 10 pm and Saturdays from 10 am until 4 pm. We do most of our fabrication at this location and our machining at the machining at inside the Engineering Building. These are both metal working shops, so don’t forget to wear closed toed shoes and some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We have our own set of safety glasses for you to use but feel free to bring your own. We look forward to hearing from you!
